FTC Finalizes ‘Click to Cancel’ Rule Enforcement Start Date — Subscription Software Vendors Must Comply by August 1, 2026

FTC Rule Forces Easy Cancels on Software You Already Use

The FTC just locked in the start date for its click-to-cancel rule. August 1st is when enforcement begins, and software vendors only have a couple months to line up.

How the Rule Actually Works

Any software that lets you click to sign up now has to let you click to cancel just as fast. No more making people hunt for a phone number or send a special email that gets ignored for days.

Albert Steed put it plain on the show: if signing up is that easy, canceling should be too. The rule covers the negative option side of things, so vendors cannot hide the exit door after they made entry simple.

Why This Hits Small Businesses Hard

You already fight wasted hours every month sorting through subscriptions that are simple to start and painful to stop. That friction is the real villain here. It keeps money flowing out while you stay in the dark about exactly what you are paying for.

Once the rule lands, you should finally see less of that runaround. Your team gains real control instead of reacting to surprise charges and long support holds.

Steps You Can Take This Week

  • Pull a list of every SaaS tool your team logs into and note which ones still require email requests or phone calls to cancel.
  • Test the cancel flow on two or three of those tools yourself so you see the current hassle firsthand.
  • Email the vendors of any tool that fails the easy-cancel test and ask for their August 1st compliance plan in writing.
  • Flag any contract renewal dates that fall after August 1st so you can decide whether to keep or drop the service before the new rule changes the process.
