Electric Motor Manufacturing Is Booming and Small Shops Should Be Paying Attention
I have a client that makes electric motors right here in Traverse City. Bay Motor Products. Great company, been doing it a long time. So when I see a story about the electric motor sector taking off, it gets my attention fast.
The demand for electric motors is surging, and it is not just the big players that stand to benefit. Small manufacturers are well positioned to pick up real business from this shift if they move on it.
Where All This Demand Is Coming From
EVs, HVAC upgrades, industrial automation. All of it needs electric motors, and a lot of it. The push to expand domestic manufacturing has been building, and I think that is a good thing. We are actually making stuff again. Hallelujah.
Industry watchers are calling this a strategic moment for firms to look hard at whether their current capabilities line up with what the electric motor supply chain actually needs. That is worth taking seriously, because supply chain openings like this tend to close fast.
What Makes Electric Motor Manufacturing Different
This is not just cutting metal or injecting plastic into a mold. From what I can tell, electric motor manufacturing is a very specific process. Lots of small components, sheet metal pieces, wire wrapped around things. It takes real skill and real knowledge to do it right.
That matters because skilled people are not everywhere. I used to do work for a company that made robots and had to use electric motors. They picked up and moved to Tennessee, where they promptly went out of business because Tennessee did not have the skilled workforce they needed. Michigan has those people. Northern Michigan especially. Do not move your company away from that.
What to Do If You Are in Manufacturing
If you make things that require motors, or if you are a supplier that could fit into this supply chain, now is the time to look around. AI tools are actually helping manufacturers find new customers and new places to sell, so that part is getting easier. Search for electric motor manufacturers or tier one suppliers in your region and reach out to their procurement teams.
And if you are in the area and want a direct connection, reach out to me and I will put you in touch with Andy at Bay Motor Products. Great guy, great products, and he has been at this a long time. Worth a conversation.
