How to Enroll in Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU)

If your business PC still runs Windows 10, this guide is for you. When Windows 10 reaches end of support on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop delivering security patches—unless you enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. Enrolling extends critical security update coverage for one additional year, through October 13, 2026, and can be done at no cost depending on your Microsoft account setup.

What the ESU Program Does (and Does Not) Include

The ESU program delivers critical security updates only. It does not include new features or general bug fixes. Microsoft’s official recommendation is to upgrade to Windows 11 or a new device when possible. ESU is a short-term bridge, not a long-term solution.

How to Enroll Before the Deadline

You must complete enrollment by October 14, 2025. Follow these steps on each Windows 10 device you want to protect:

  1. Open Windows Update. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Find the ESU enrollment link. Look for a link or button to enroll in Extended Security Updates.
  3. Sign in to your Microsoft account if you are not already signed in. You will be prompted to do so.
  4. Choose your enrollment method. You will see three options:
    1. Free via settings backup: If you have settings backup enabled and synced to the cloud through your Microsoft account, enrollment is free by default.
    2. Free via Microsoft Rewards: Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points for one free year of updates.
    3. One-time purchase: Pay a one-time fee of $30 for the ESU subscription.
  5. Confirm enrollment. Complete the process. Your device will then receive security updates after the official support end date.

Next Steps

ESU coverage runs only through October 13, 2026. We strongly recommend planning a Windows 11 upgrade or hardware refresh before that date arrives. If you need help evaluating your devices or managing this transition across your business, contact the ACS team.
