Starting today, April 1st 2026, forgetting to renew your Microsoft 365 subscription no longer means a quiet 90-day safety net. Now it means automatic charges at a premium rate. Here is what changed and why you need to audit your subscriptions today.

What Happened

Microsoft has eliminated the free 90-day grace period that previously kept services running when a subscription expired or auto-renewal was turned off. Previously, if you missed a renewal, Microsoft would keep your services active for 90 days while they tried to reach you — then shut it off if you never responded.

Now, expired subscriptions automatically roll into a paid “Extended Service Term” at month-to-month rates plus a 3% surcharge. The only way to avoid these charges is to explicitly cancel before the subscription end date. No more free safety net.

What This Means for Your Business

If you manage your own Microsoft 365 licenses and were counting on that grace period as a cushion, it is gone. Every subscription you forget about starts billing at a premium rate the moment it lapses. This is especially dangerous for businesses that add and remove seats seasonally — a few forgotten licenses compounding at month-to-month plus 3% adds up fast.

The silver lining: at least your services will not get shut off unexpectedly anymore. Microsoft’s old approach of cutting access after 90 days could leave employees locked out of email and files with no warning. The new approach keeps things running but charges you for the privilege.
