New Insurance Carrier Targets Dry Cleaners, Salons and Service Firms

A New Insurance Option for Service Businesses — And What It Actually Tells You About Running Yours

There is a new insurance carrier called Corgi, and it is making a move that caught my attention — not because I think you should necessarily call them up tomorrow, but because of how they pulled it off.

What Corgi Is Actually Doing

Corgi started out insuring AI startups. That is a very specific, very niche market — venture-backed tech companies, angel-funded founders, that kind of crowd. Not exactly the dry cleaner on the corner or the salon two blocks from your office.

But now they are expanding. They are going after small service businesses — dry cleaners, salons, and similar operations — businesses that have historically been stuck with generic policies that were never really built for how they actually work. Corgi is positioning itself to fill that gap with coverage tailored to the real risks those businesses face.

I went to their website and verified this is true. They are real, they are doing this, and it is an interesting move.

Why a Company That Insured AI Startups Is Now Covering Dry Cleaners

Here is the part that actually got me thinking. You do not just jump from insuring venture-backed AI companies to insuring dry cleaners without having some very tight information on how dry cleaners work — what their risks are, what claims look like, what the numbers say. That is a big leap.

My bet? They are using the same AI tools they were insuring to make that leap possible. Think about it. Instead of hiring a bunch of new insurance reps and back-office people to learn a whole new industry, they likely built intelligent workflows, automated underwriting, maybe even phone systems that handle a big chunk of the intake process. That brings the cost down. And when your cost is down, you can price competitively in markets that bigger carriers have ignored because the margins were too thin to bother with.

That is how you go from AI startup insurer to dry cleaner insurer without blowing up your business model. It is not magic. It is process, automation, and using your own tools well.

What This Means for Your Business — Even If You Are Not a Dry Cleaner

Look, I do not work with many dry cleaners. And honestly, Corgi does not even cover managed IT companies like mine — I checked. So this is not a commercial for them. But the story matters to you if you run any kind of service business, because the underlying problem Corgi is solving is real.

A lot of service businesses are stuck with insurance that was never designed for them. Generic policies that do not account for what you actually do, how your team works, or where your real exposure is. That is the villain here — coverage that leaves gaps you do not even know about until something goes wrong. And by then, it is too late to fix it.

The bigger takeaway, though, is what Corgi’s move demonstrates about your own business. If a niche insurance company can use AI-powered workflows to serve a completely different market at a lower cost — without hiring an army of new people — you can probably do something similar in your own operation. There are customers you are not serving right now because the economics do not work at your current cost structure. Automation changes that math.

I am seriously looking at how to do exactly this at ACS — building a fully automated service tier for customers who do not need our full premium offering but still need solid support. Corgi’s story is a good reminder that it is possible.

What To Do This Week

  • Review your current business insurance. Call your agent and ask specifically whether your policy covers the actual risks of your service operations — not just generic liability. Ask what is not covered. You may be surprised by the answer.
  • Look up Corgi if you run a salon, dry cleaning operation, or similar service business. It may or may not be a fit, but it is worth knowing your options. Local carriers are still worth calling first — but competition is good for pricing.
  • Think about one service or customer segment you are currently not reaching because the economics do not work. Write it down. Then ask yourself whether a smarter workflow or automation could change that math — because that is exactly what Corgi just did at scale.
  • If you want to explore what AI-powered workflows could do for your business — whether that is serving new customers, cutting overhead, or just getting more out of tools you already pay for — that is something we work through with business owners directly through our managed AI service.
