How to Clear the Microsoft Office File Cache

Who This Affects and What It Fixes

This guide is for small-business employees who are unable to open or edit OneDrive files in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. Performing an Online Repair and deleting a specific cached-file folder will clear corrupted or stale cache data and restore normal access to your OneDrive files.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have saved any open work and closed all Microsoft Office applications before starting. You will also need access to your Windows user account on the affected computer.

Steps to Clear the Office File Cache

  1. Run an Online Repair on Microsoft Office.

Open the Windows Control Panel, go to Programs > Programs and Features, select your Microsoft Office installation from the list, and click Change. When prompted, choose Online Repair and follow the on-screen instructions to completion. This process requires an internet connection and may take several minutes.

  2. Delete the Office file cache folder.

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type or paste the following path into the box and press Enter:

    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OfficeFileCache

A File Explorer window will open showing the contents of that folder. Select all files and folders inside it and delete them. You are deleting only the cached data, not the folder itself—though deleting the folder is also safe, as Office will recreate it automatically.

  3. Test your OneDrive file access.

Open the Office application you were using (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or whichever app applies) and attempt to open your OneDrive file again. Verify that the file loads correctly.

Common questions

Why can’t I open my OneDrive files in Microsoft Office?

A corrupted or outdated Office file cache is a common cause. The cache stores temporary file data, and when it becomes corrupted, Office may be unable to access files stored in OneDrive. Clearing the cache and running an Online Repair typically resolves the issue.

Will deleting the Office file cache folder remove my OneDrive documents?

No. The cache folder contains only temporary data used by Office to speed up file access. Your actual OneDrive documents are stored in the cloud and are not affected when you delete this folder.

How long does the Online Repair take?

The Online Repair process requires an active internet connection and typically takes several minutes to complete, depending on your connection speed. Keep Office applications closed while the repair runs.
