Pentagon Breach Exposes Data of Over 3 Million People

The Pentagon Got Breached. You Are Not Too Small to Be Next.

I love pointing this one out. The Pentagon has one of the largest IT security budgets on the planet. And they still got hacked. Over 3 million records, gone.

So if you are sitting there thinking your little business in a small town is flying under the radar, I need you to hear this again, because I have been saying it for years and it is still true.

They Do Not Know Who You Are, and That Is the Problem

The old saying is, “I’m just a small business in a small town, they don’t care about me.” I understand why people think that. But it is wrong, and here is why.

The internet is the ultimate shotgun. These attackers can blast all over the world, hitting thousands of targets at almost no cost. They do not know your name. They do not know your town. They do not know what you do. They are not targeting you specifically. They are targeting everyone, all at once, and seeing what sticks.

If you are not paying attention because you think you are safe, and something slips through, that is on you. Not on them.

Spending More Money Is Not Always the Answer

I am not telling you this to get you to write a bigger check. If the Pentagon can get breached with their budget, throwing money at the problem is not automatically the fix.

What we do need is to have the conversations. Review your access controls. Know what data you have, who can get to it, and how it is protected. That is where this starts. Not with a panic purchase, but with a real look at what you have got.

If you have employees or family members connected to the defense world, a breach like this can also open the door to follow-on phishing. Someone gets your name and email from a leaked HR system and then sends you something that looks completely legitimate. That is the next wave you watch for.

The takeaway is simple: if the Pentagon can get hit, so can you. Have the conversation before something forces you to.
