Who This Affects and What Fixes It
This issue affects employees using Windows 10 or later — including those working on Windows servers — who find that typing after opening the Start Menu does nothing, or that the taskbar search bar refuses to accept keyboard input. The fix takes less than a minute, requires no restart, and is safe to perform on a live machine. If the steps below do not resolve the problem, contact Advanced Computer Solutions for further assistance.
What the Problem Looks Like
You may have this issue if you notice either of the following:
- Opening the Start Menu and immediately typing does not switch it into search mode — the menu just sits there as if you pressed a key on the keyboard after already clicking something.
- Clicking the search bar or search icon on the taskbar opens the search panel, but any keys you press are ignored and no text appears.
Because many people do not use Start Menu search as part of their daily routine, this problem can go unnoticed for some time.
First: Confirm Your Keyboard Is Working
Before running the fix, make sure the issue is specific to Windows search and not your keyboard or input method. Follow these steps:
- Open any application that accepts text — for example, Notepad, WordPad, or a web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.
- Click inside a text field and try typing.
- If text appears normally, your keyboard is working correctly and the steps below should resolve the issue. If text does not appear, the problem may be with your keyboard or input device rather than Windows search.
How to Fix Windows Start Menu and Taskbar Search
- Open the Run dialog by right-clicking the Start Menu and selecting Run, or by pressing Win + R on your keyboard (if your setup allows the Windows key to pass through).
- In the Run dialog box, type the following exactly as shown and then press OK or Enter:
C:\Windows\system32\ctfmon.exe - Nothing visible will happen on screen — that is expected. Wait a moment, then try opening the Start Menu or taskbar search bar and typing again.
Search input should now work normally. If the problem persists, please contact ACS so a technician can investigate further.
